Composition - Applications

Photographers tackle composition in different ways depending on their genres; landscape photographers aren't in control of every aspect such as weather/lighting whereas still-life photographers are able to control every aspect.

Landscape Photography
  • Light reveals texture.
  • Shape and form are revealed by the illumination of the sun/moon constantly moving.
  • The image can be completely transformed by changes in lighting.
  • Consider sense of place so the photographs have emotional depth.

Still Life Photography
  • The arrangement of inanimate objects.
  • Shape and form is main interest.
  • Single light source and reflector are used.
  • The background can be lit.
  • Can be done outside with natural light.

Portrait Photography
  • Formal or candid style.
  • In a studio or on location for either style.
  • Simple window light and reflector used.
  • Environmental portraiture can provide contrast and context.
  • Two or more people is a lot harder than photographing an individual.

Documentary Photography
  • Creates a document/record.
  • Series of pictures over time to document a subject.

Figure Photography
  • Nude photography is depersonalised.
  • The face is often cropped out to remove facial expressions.
  • Lighting is used to reveal form and textures of a body.

Action/Sports Photography
  • Must capture the interest of sports fan and general viewer.
  • Pre-visualise and react to rapidly changing events.
  • Composition must be unconscious and immediate.

Fine Art Photography
  • Undertaken for aesthetic values.
  • Self-expression and specific meanings aimed at the viewer.
  • Karen Melvin - mix 2D and 3D objects in an image.

Advertising Photography
  • Composition needed to plan for how the photo will be used e.g. where the text will go on it.
  • Text on an image can have a huge effect on the perception of depth.
