First Session with the Cameras

We went around campus and took photos of anything we saw to familiarise ourselves with the Nikon D7000. Having very little experience with DSLRs myself, trying to learn some of the camera controls was challenging and I will need a lot more practice before I know how to use the camera.

The photo to the left which I took I like because of the angles of the buildings and the contrast of the building on the right, with only horizontal and vertical lines, and the circular building on the left. The right building provides stability to the image whereas the left provides a dissimilarity to this. I also like how the clouds are beginning to break through the image, but the sky area still looks quite empty. I dislike the corner of a building on the left in the image and the people walking in the frame. It could be a more interesting photo if it was a long exposure shot with people walking through the frame, similar to the image below.

For similar reasons to the image above, I like this image I took because of the contrast of lines. The circular building is contrasted by the rails in front of it, as well as the building behind it. Unlike the image above, this has a more interesting divide between the building and the sky due to the shape of the roof. The contrast of the tree and grass being natural with the very typical colour of the bricks shows how natural and man-made things can contrast and be combined. However, I dislike this image because it is very busy. There is a lot going on and everything is in focus so the viewer is torn on what to look at.

The worst image I took was the one below. I dislike it because it is out of focus and there is a lot going on in the frame. The post to the right of the image was not meant to be in the frame and the image would look better without the window at the top and the green sign in the top right. The angle is also very predictable, with all my photos being taken at eye level and so moving the camera to a higher or lower viewpoint would make the image more interesting.
