Below is a mind map of my ideas for my project.
I then picked my favourites and merged them into one idea - fear and double exposure. The first slide is inspiration for my project, including photographs of double exposure as well as ones of fear. I particularly like the one of the woman's back - the fear of thunder and lightning. For my project i want to include the details of each person as well as representing their specific fears. One idea is to use the photographs in black and white, or with limited colour but the eyes being bright and in colour. The test shot is of the fear of being strangled. The edit was quick and rough of photoshop and doing it helped me figure out what I can do to improve the editing. I plan to go against the stereotype of double exposure and not make the photos aesthetically pleasing, but more relating to horror.
Feedback
Below is a spreadsheet of the feedback I received for my proposal. As shown, everyone understood my idea which is positive. The suggested fault that finding enough variety will be hard has made me think more about the fears I will use. I will encourage the subjects I use to pick either their greatest fear or one which nobody else has picked. The tip to get a range of different types of people made me think about who I want to represent in this photographic essay. I think just using students won't give enough variety so I will use people from different generations and backgrounds, which will hopefully also give a variety of the fears expressed. In my test shot, I used black and white images and overlayed a very desaturated image over the top. I shall research more into the use of colour in photography to decide what my use of colour in my final photographs will be. I really like the idea to have the final photograph as a self-portrait as it would make the project more personal and allow me to represent my own fears. I will have to think carefully about what fear I will represent.
