Gender, Gaze, Otherness & Photography

  • Diane Arbus - people with abnormalities - tried to represent them honestly - people saw it as representing them as 'freaks' - intentions behind photographs are important.
  • Elizabeth 'Lee' Miller - surrealist movement, war correspondent for Vogue, Solarisation technique with Man Ray, focused on women during the war.
  • Nan Goldin - documented AIDs crisis in the '90s - controversial.
  • Power of eyes e.g. Afghan Girl.
Selection:
  • Quality criteria:
    • Exposure

    • Resolution - how will the image be used?
    • Aspect ratios - will they be cropped?
    • Blurring - motion blur/ depth of field - wanted or not?
    • Composition & rule of thirds
    • Tonal spectrum/histogram

    • Fits with concept of interest
    • Stands out in some way or is visually unusual
