The theme of representing difference - especially racial and ethnic difference. Represented as hero and villain at the same time. Many potential meanings of an image - privilege one. Caption anchors the meaning with words. Meaning lies in the conjunction of the image and text. Image shows event and message - meta-message. Seeing comes before words - effects what we believe. Aware that we can also be seen. All images are man-made - an image is a sight which has been recreated or reproduced - detached appearance(s) from the place and time. The image can outlast what it represents - how somebody had once looked - richer than literature in this sense. Flickr - currently the world’s largest photo sharing website. Flickr was initially regarded mostly as a photo repository, it has quickly grown into a social network site the value of which hinges on interaction, dynamic exchange and a constant stream of added pictures. Through the accumulation of individually uploaded images a joint perspective on the world emerges. In a sociological sense of the term, collective memory means people experience a connection between what happens in general and how they are involved as individuals; in a historical or historiographical sense, it means that people somehow feel part of a communal past or ordering of that past.
